adesso is moving even closer to the research in Lower Saxony

With countless partnerships with universities and universities of applied sciences in Germany, adesso is seeking direct contact with students, professors and academic staff and is fulfilling its obligation to promote new STEM talents. The adessi are out and about doing things such as participating in guest lectures, giving lectures themselves, working on research projects with the Science department, providing assistance with dissertations and helping students prepare for the professional world that awaits them.

Fact check – the University of Hildesheim

With over 8,000 students in the nearly 100,000 inhabitant-strong municipality of Hildesheim, the University of Hildesheim concentrates on four departments:

  • 1. Education Studies and Social Sciences
  • 2. Cultural Studies and Aesthetic Communication
  • 3. Linguistics and Information Sciences
  • 4. Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Economics and Computer Science

The fourth department, with over 900 students, comprises three degree programmes:

  • Information Management and Information Technology (IMIT) – since 2000
  • Business Informatics (BI) – since 2007
  • Data Analytics (DA) – since 2016

Among the other things taught are Basics of Computer Science, including programming languages (such as Java or Python) and databases, and Basics of Business Administration – including Internal and External Accounting and Marketing.

From concept to partnership

Our initial contact with the University of Hildesheim was established through one of its former lecturers. Joint discussions were held during which considerations were made as to the extent to which adesso could get involved and how both partners as wells the students could benefit. Suitable areas for involvement were of course found: adesso is able to contribute to lectures and other courses in a wide variety of subject areas, as we offer end-to-end solutions on-site at our customers’ premises.

For example, in addition to merely computer science lectures, there are also subjects such as business process optimisation, business information systems, agile project management and much more. These subjects and others are part of adessi’s daily work, which means they are able to teach and give accounts directly from experience.

For adesso, the partnership with the University of Hildesheim is a great opportunity to exchange ideas with students and keep the topic of research well in mind. It is also an initial point of contact with Hildesheim, the second largest city in Lower Saxony. Above all, however, it is about learning together – from one another and with one another.

One partnership, countless possibilities

The University of Hildesheim promotes close contact between companies and students. Students have various options to get in touch with different companies for their ten-week business internships. One possibility is IT speed dating, where students and companies have the opportunity to get to know one another in person in short interviews. The students can then apply for internships at those companies. adesso has also already successfully participated in one of these speed dating events and offers corresponding internships in this context.

In addition to typical points of contact, such as during working student activities and when helping students with their bachelor’s and master’s dissertations and essays, the university hosts a biannual exchange between partner companies and the university via the Information Technology Working Group (Arbeitskreis Informationstechnologie, AKIT). During the event, students have the opportunity to present their dissertations, project work and the work they have done during their internships. At the same time, business lectures addressing current as well as upcoming trends within software development complement the methods and approaches used in everyday business.

In addition to two guest lectures on the topic of customer experience management, adesso was able to further strengthen and expand the partnership by taking over a lecture on agile project management during the university’s 2022/23 winter semester. The lecture, which was both interactive and based on practical experience, was complemented by three additional guest lectures by adessi on everyday project management, design thinking, lean start-ups and the Scaled Agile framework. What is more, a student who attended the lecture has been actively working for us in the Project Management Office in Hanover since February 2023.
